Impaler 1, according to Image Comics...
What happens when the original old-school vampire Vlad Tepes comes back from a 500-year limbo to unleash hell on modern-day vampires? That is a question Impaler aims to answer this October from Image Comics.
Created and written by William Harms and illustrated by Nick Postic & Nick Marinkovich, Impaler takes place in a modern-day New York City that has been destroyed by a vampire attack. Now, a small band of human survivors must wage a guerilla war against them for survival.
'Impaler is a very action-packed book with lots of blood and gore,' explains Harms. 'No offense to anyone who digs Anne Rice's vampires, but there isn't any of that in Impaler. The vampires in this book are hardcore monsters; they kill everyone and everything that crosses their path. They want to destroy the world.'
Impaler takes a cue more from horror novels than other horror comics as it blends fully developed, sympathetic characters with extreme situations and vampires who have scarier powers than anything you can imagine. The vampires in Impaler can become one with the shadows, allowing them to attack their victims without ever being seen.
'None of the standard conventions, such as crosses, holy water, or garlic, apply,' says Harms. 'However, if you can shoot them in the head, they die. If you can stab them in the head, they die. The problem is that they can shift from solid to shadow form so quickly that it can be hard to tag one. Which is why Vlad wields a sword made of pure iron--iron will kill the vampires no matter their state.'
To bring this new vision of horror to life, Harms turned to Nick Postic and Nick Marinkovich, best known for their work on the Underworld comic adaptation.
'Nick and Nick perfectly realized the look that I wanted,' Harms says. 'Their art is amazing, and Impaler wouldn't be the book it is without them. They kick some serious ass and I am thrilled that they're my partners on this project.'
